Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement occupational, industrial hygiene and safety policies and procedures.
- Administer all aspects of safety programs within a department.
- Research and interpret complex safety and health and industrial hygiene regulations.
- Investigates and evaluates safety conditions and accidents; makes recommendations for workplace safety to conform with occupational safety standards and industrial hygiene principles.
- Formulates and writes safety and industrial hygiene policies and procedures ensuring compliance with federal and state safety regulations.
- Organizes, coordinates and conducts safety training on SPU programs and procedures to promote safe working conditions among supervisors and employees.
- Ensure enforcement of safety regulations through line supervisors and management
- Evaluate safety and health programs related to Construction, Ergonomics, and Industrial Hygiene safety and health standards.
- Conduct regular job site or facility safety audits to identify and correct unsafe working conditions while ensuring supervisors are reinforcing safety procedures.
- Able to educate and collaborate with employees and leadership on safety best practices.
- Attend morning dispatch, operations safety meetings, and division leadership meetings to promote safety practices and policies.
- Utilize noise dosimeters, air monitors and other equipment.
- Develops Job Safety Analysis and works with front line staff on follow up training.
- Works with utility safety committees providing safety guidance and works with management to facilitate implementation.
- Maintains regular contact with Department heads, City, state and federal safety officials and experts.
- Reviews contractor Health and Safety plans and monitor construction projects for safety compliance.
- Collaborates with other safety team members on a variety of projects and program reviews.
Qualifications: Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a safety or health related field or equivalent field. Education: A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene. Biology, Engineering, or another related field. Combinations of appropriate education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements. Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- Required to wear personal protective equipment, follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
- Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies.
- Work is performed in both office and at jobsites.
- Required to be part of the safety office standby rotation for emergency response
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
- At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License, or ability to do so within 30 days of hire date.
You will be most successful in this role if you possess one or more of the following:
- Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist (preferred but not required).
- Experience developing JSA's and SOP's in an operations environment.
- Experience with database management and creating safety reports.
- Effective oral and written communication skills at all levels in an organization.
- Familiarity with Confined Space, Lock Out/Tag Out, Traffic Control/Flagging, Fall Protection, Trenching/Shoring, Hazardous Waste Operations in Construction and General Industry.
- Experience in developing Site Specific Safety Plans and reviewing contractors safety plans.
- Reviewing and Developing Safety Procedures.
- Ability to facilitate technical training and presentations.
- Strong skills in working collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent customer service skills for internal and external customers.
- Skills in Safety Management Systems and Microsoft 365.

Workplace Environment: Employees will be required to come into the office five days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor. The full salary range for this position is $54.28 - $63.19 per hour. Benefits: The City of Seattle offers a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, holiday, and sick leave as well as medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance for employees and their dependents.
