Summary:
The Shift Lead plays a key leadership role in supporting a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment by both directing and working alongside the custodial team. This position requires a dependable and hands-on leader who takes pride in ensuring school facilities are well-maintained and fully operational. In addition to performing routine janitorial tasks, the Shift Lead will coordinate daily assignments, manage custodial schedules, monitor supply usage, and assist with minor maintenance to ensure service quality and consistency throughout the school district.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Supervisory Responsibilities: Lead and support the custodial team through training, task delegation, coaching, and performance feedback. Develop daily and weekly work schedules to ensure effective coverage and operational consistency. Monitor work quality, ensure compliance with cleaning protocols, and conduct regular site inspections. Address staff questions or concerns promptly and professionally. Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations in collaboration with the Site Manager and Shift Supervisor. Cleaning and Maintenance Operations: Perform routine cleaning duties as needed, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing surfaces. Develop and oversee cleaning schedules for classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, gyms, cafeterias, and common areas. Operate and ensure the proper care of custodial equipment, such as auto scrubbers, burnishers, and carpet extractors. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and submit reorders when needed. Promptly report any maintenance concerns or facility-related issues to the Shift Supervisor, Site Manager, or Facilities Director to ensure timely resolution. Uphold safety protocols, including proper chemical handling and equipment use. Facility Security and Safety: Help maintain building security by ensuring doors and windows are secured when appropriate. Respond promptly to spills, urgent cleaning needs, or safety hazards. Support setup and teardown efforts for school events and other scheduled activities. Communication and Collaboration: Maintain clear, respectful communication with school leadership, teachers, and other staff. Collaborate with internal departments and vendors to ensure facility needs are met. Attend team meetings or site walkthroughs as needed. Other Duties: Carry out other duties as assigned by the Site Manager, Shift Supervisor, Facilities Director, Principal, or other designated leadership. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in custodial services, preferably within a school or institutional environment. Prior supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Solid understanding of custodial procedures, cleaning materials, and safe equipment operation. Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot standard janitorial equipment. Ability to read and comprehend safety protocols, product labels, and written instructions. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced setting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with team members and school personnel. Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team environment. Physical capability to perform custodial tasks, including lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods. Ability to successfully pass a background check and any other required pre-employment clearances. Physical Demands: Sustained periods of standing, sitting, walking and kneeling Ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
