Job Description
SUMMARY
The Retail Accountant role is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company’s retail stores, with a focus on accurate reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and strong internal controls. This position supports effective business decision-making by monitoring expenses, managing financial records, and ensuring that all accounting processes align with regulatory requirements and organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (the list is not all inclusive)- Manages all company accounting activities for the Retail Store locations.
· Oversees monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
· Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports.
· Monitors store expenses, supplier invoices, inventory and cash.
· Oversees inventory valuation and support periodic stock counts.
· Ensures compliance with tax laws and statutory requirements (Excise, Sales and CBT).
· Supports budget preparation, forecasting, and cost control initiatives.
· Liaises with auditors and provide necessary documentation for reviews.
· Implements strong internal controls and improve accounting processes.
· Supports the Retail management team and operations as the primary accounting contact.
· Performs other duties as assigned to support the team and organizational goals.
CORE COMPETENCIES
· Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, close processes, reporting, and compliance with excise, sales, and cannabis business tax requirements.
· Strong ability to interpret financial data, perform quantitative analysis, monitor expenses, evaluate inventory, and resolve discrepancies effectively.
· Maintains accuracy in reporting, reconciliation, and inventory valuation while exercising discretion and safeguarding sensitive financial information.
· Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, including presenting financial data in a way that supports decision-making and cross-functional teamwork.
· Implements and strengthens internal controls, identifies opportunities for efficiency, and supports audit readiness.
· Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills, consistently meets deadlines, and manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
· Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and work effectively across various sectors of the department as needed or requested by a direct supervisor. This includes the capacity to support other departments, ensuring seamless collaboration and responsiveness to organizational needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Constantly: Walking, sitting at a desk, grasping/gripping, bending/stooping/squatting, finger dexterity, computer input, coordination of hand and eye.
· Frequently: Standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs, and twisting.
· Occasionally: Reaching above shoulder height, lifting 20-30 lbs., ability to do push/pull motions. Travel to site locations required.
· Occasional travel to Retail locations is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
● Bachelor’s degree with Accounting/Finance focus.
● 5+ years of progressively responsible GAAP accounting experience
● Advanced experience with MS Office Suite applications
● Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process.
● Experience in the cannabis industry a plus but not required.
● Experience with Dutchie, Acumatica and Metrc a plus but not required.
