In a dynamic educational setting, a crucial role exists for a 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter. This position focuses on facilitating communication for a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, ensuring they have full access to the academic curriculum and social interactions throughout the school day.
Location: Absecon, NJ
Job Duration: Contract position for the school year
Key Responsibilities:
Provide real-time interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa during classroom instruction and school activities.
Support the student in understanding class content, assignments, and social interactions.
Collaborate with educators and special education staff to ensure that communication needs are met according to the students Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in line with FERPA and IDEA guidelines.
Actively participate in IEP meetings, offering insights related to communication and educational access.
Prepare for classroom content in advance to deliver accurate and effective interpretation.
Foster the students independence and self-advocacy skills within the educational environment.
Qualifications:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL); RID or EIPA certification accepted, with a minimum 3.5 EIPA Score.
High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelors degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field strongly preferred.
At least one year of experience working with school-aged children in an educational setting is preferred.
Strong understanding of Deaf culture and the educational needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain professionalism in a school environment.
