Overview
Position: Director, Alcatraz Retail (DAR)
Base pay range: $110,000.00/yr
Salary/Benefits: $110,000/year (Grade 24). Organization and Department
Organization Description: Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service. It supports the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) and works with partners to enhance park stewardship, education, and access.
Department Description: The Interpretive Centers and Sales Department develops and operates visitor centers and merchandise programs across the Golden Gate National Parks, including Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods, Lands End, and Presidio locations. The department manages warehousing, distribution, and online sales programs.
Position Overview
The Director of Alcatraz Retail (DAR) is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to stabilize and grow retail operations on Alcatraz Island. The DAR will direct operations and staff to maximize financial success and provide positive visitor experiences. Responsibilities include policy and training implementation, creating a positive workplace, safety, staff development, and achieving sales and budget goals. The DAR serves as the primary liaison for Alcatraz Island retail matters and collaborates with Conservancy staff, the National Park Service (NPS), and Alcatraz City Cruises. The DAR will also oversee the guest author program to ensure its financial success.
Reports To: Senior Director, Visitor Centers
Supervision: Direct reports with authority to coach retail managers and staff toward goals and deliverables.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Direct, develop, and lead all retail programs, communications, and resources for Alcatraz sites, focusing on staff, sales, inventory, merchandising, signage, and visitor experience.
Develop and manage annual site budgets and expenses in collaboration with SDVC and Alcatraz leadership.
Implement and monitor compliance with retail policies and procedures to ensure a profitable division.
Manage monthly barge deliveries in collaboration with the Director of Alcatraz Operations.
Direct ordering and warehousing of products and publications on the island.
Direct data analysis and reporting to identify trends and improve sales performance.
Oversee all physical aspects of island stores to maximize efficiency, safety, and profitability.
Develop author programs, schedule authors, and manage communications for the program.
Direct year-end inventories and reconciliation processes.
Collaborate with senior leadership on new projects and opportunities.
Other duties as assigned.
Staff Development, Communication, and Collaboration
Direct, hire, coach, train, and support Alcatraz Sales and Inventory Managers to optimize operations, visitor experience, sales, and profitability.
Post jobs, recruit, interview, and hire staff with equitable practices in partnership with People and Culture.
Collaborate with internal teams to foster a positive staff experience and a collaborative work culture.
Maintain a positive, professional work environment with open communication and respect.
Meet with SDVC weekly to stay informed on all Alcatraz retail matters and ensure policy compliance.
Support Paycor/ADP processes, new hire orientation, and performance documentation.
Administer annual performance appraisals and participate in senior interpretive leadership activities.
Manage corporate expenses and reporting through Nexonia; participate in cross-branch teams as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Conservancy, Partner, and Community Liaison
Collaborate with Visitor Services and NPS partners to improve visitor services and increase island visitation.
Represent Alcatraz Retail in meetings and task forces; collaborate with Retail Managers, SDVC, SDIDS, and VPVCS.
Ensure spaces and programs are accessible and relevant for all communities; develop partnerships across Conservancy branches.
Foster positive community relations with Indigenous Communities and other organizations.
DEI, Safety, and Facilities
Promote an equitable and inclusive work culture and advance DEI initiatives.
Coordinate with facilities, safety, and IT to maintain safe, well-maintained sites.
Manage inventory of PPE and sanitization products.

Education and Experience
Minimum 5-7 years in high-volume, logistically complex retail, hospitality, or food service management.
Previous staff supervisory experience required.
Experience developing policies and training programs.
Knowledge of or ability to use POS systems; ability to create and analyze sales/inventory reports.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint).
Health, Safety, and Physical Requirements
Position located on Alcatraz Island; may work at Fort Mason location as needed.
Onsite 5 days per week, including one weekend day.
Work involves sitting, standing, walking, reaching; may lift up to 50 lbs; may drive a forklift (training provided).
May perform work on a dock and on a barge; CA Driver’s License required as needed.
Ability to travel across the SF Bay Area, including to Alcatraz and Fort Mason.
