Learn About a Day In the Life of a Surgical Tech:
Responsibilities
The OR Scrub Technician provides scrub assistance skills within the OR suite and is responsible for the cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization of surgical instruments according to manufacturers recommended guidelines or instructions for use. He/she is familiar with and supportive of Center policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
Review the patient's chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.
Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
Assists other members of the team with room turnover and terminal cleaning of room.
Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care
Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the surgical technologist in the first scrub role prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program and hold current certification with one of the following: The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, the National Center for Competency Testing or another surgical technologist certification program approved by the Kansas Department of State Health Service.
Current BLS certification.
Preferred Qualifications
One-year prior experience.
