The patient care assistant assists in patient care delivery, clerical functions and provides unit support through a variety of functions.

Essential responsibilities include upholding Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, principles of responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws. The role involves providing basic nursing care needs to assigned patients, making visual observations, reporting abnormalities, documenting patient observation and direct care information, taking accurate assignments, and working as a team member with assigned RN and other healthcare workers. The assistant must be able to organize time, prioritize assignments, and visit each assigned patient at the beginning of the shift/assignment to report observations to the RN. They are also responsible for making rounds, using the multidisciplinary plan of care as a guide, identifying discharge barriers, and communicating to the RN. The assistant assists with or provides activities of daily living, collects simple specimens, reinforces pulmonary hygiene, provides nourishments, administers minor treatments and procedures, performs cast care, monitors patient care environment for cleanliness and safety, maintains a clean work area, and complies with patient safety practices and policies.
