Admin Weather leave: All ODVA employees are considered essential personnel. ODVA employees are required to work during inclement weather. You will accrue up to 8 hours per day or 32 hours total of admin leave if you are working during inclement weather to use within the 6 months from the date of accrual. Military Leave: Military leave with pay is limited to thirty (30) days, specifically two hundred forty (240) hours of pay within a federal fiscal year, beginning October 1 and ending September 30. The employee must furnish the Appointing Authority the appropriate "military orders" which instructs the employee to report for active duty.

Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for supporting laboratory operations, performing maintenance functions and completing non-technical routine laboratory tests and procedures under the direction of professional staff.

Typical Functions

  • Performs routine laboratory procedures such as preparation of media and basic preparation of slides and smears.
  • Conducts non-technical routine laboratory tests and procedures under the direction of professional staff.
  • Sets up and operates laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations.
  • Opens, separates, numbers and arranges specimens for laboratory examination and trace results.
  • Maintains simple laboratory records and inventory for supplies and reagents.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining quality assurance records.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures.

Level Descriptor

This is the career level where incumbents are fully qualified to perform a variety of routine laboratory tests and procedures using standard testing procedures and assists more experienced personnel in performing more complex testing procedures.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in laboratory work performing laboratory procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one college-level laboratory science course for each six months of the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the maintenance of routine records and reports; and of elementary laboratory techniques and safety precautions. Ability is required to perform basic laboratory tasks; to keep specimens properly marked; to maintain adequate written laboratory records; and to utilize a computer.

Special Requirements

Some positions at the Department of Veterans Affairs may require current certification in good standing as a Phlebotomist for Level II and III. Some positions at the Department of Corrections may require current certification in good standing as a Phlebotomist for Level II and III.
