Overview
Omega Technical Services is seeking a Shift Operations Manager (SOM) to support critical operations at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) . This position plays a vital role in executing LANL's mission by ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient oversight of operational activities across highly regulated facilities. The SOM will work within a complex operational environment and must bring leadership, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to safety.
This position is not a LANL staff role but is in direct support of LANL programs through employment with Omega Technical Services.
Summary
The Shift Operations Manager oversees, authorizes, and manages a broad range of operational functions including safety/compliance basis, environmental and health protection, quality assurance, production and work control, engineering, maintenance, inventory and materials management, and shipping/receiving.
This role includes participation in rotational shift work , covering off-hours operations (nights, weekends, holidays) and includes mentoring responsibilities for junior staff and peers to foster professional development, promote safety culture, and support succession planning.
Key Responsibilities might include:
Implement Integrated Safety Management (ISM) as a line responsibility, ensuring safety is integrated into every task.
Lead planning and execution of daily and weekly operations, including coordination of work control and scheduling.
Oversee duty officer responsibilities during assigned shifts and manage off-hours events and abnormal occurrences.
Ensure all work is properly authorized and compliant with DOE and LANL requirements.
Maintain facility operating limits and regulatory documentation.
Coordinate multidisciplinary resources including safety, security, engineering, maintenance, QA/QC, logistics, and training staff.
Serve as a mentor and technical advisor to junior staff and supervisors.
Provide leadership in investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
Review and authorize integrated work activities and ensure hazards and controls are appropriately identified.
Translate mission and customer requirements into effective operational strategies.
Develop and manage operations-related budgets, policies, and procedures.
Manage and support hiring, onboarding, and performance development for direct reports.
Foster a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free workplace.
Communicate and enforce operational policies and expectations to internal teams and external stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and DOE regulations.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
10+ years of relevant experience in operational, maintenance, or facility management in DOE, nuclear, or similarly regulated environments.
Proven ability to lead diverse teams and manage shift-based operations.
Strong understanding of ISM, Conduct of Operations, and integrated work planning principles.
Proficiency with computerized work control and scheduling systems (e.g., Primavera, CMMS).
Experience mentoring and developing team members in technical environments.
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance (active preferred).
Must be available to work rotational shifts as part of 24/7 operational coverage.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience supporting operations at LANL or other DOE/NNSA national laboratories.
Familiarity with LANL-specific work control and safety systems.
Experience with facility process systems and maintenance programs in a nuclear or high-hazard environment.
Human Reliability Program participation (if required by function).
