Senior Pharmacy Technician

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our team. This position provides specialized support with inventory management, regulatory auditing, sterile compounding, and record maintenance to the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies under the general supervision of a pharmacy manager. Coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of a pharmacy service area under the general supervision of a pharmacist. The position will provide operational support unique to the UI North Dodge, Quad Cities, and River Crossing Pharmacy areas.

Position Responsibilities:

Provides coverage for the North Dodge, River Crossing and Quad Cities Pharmacy performing a variety of technician duties.

Participate in inventory management activities:

  • Assists with ordering supplies and medications for pharmacy areas
  • Consistently monitors usage patterns and adjust PAR levels accordingly
  • Maintains an inventory that will reduce waste
  • Incorporates strategies to reduce cost
  • Participates in activities related to medication recalls
  • Assists with data collection and runs reports as requested
  • Participates in 100% inventory for designated pharmacy locations

Under pharmacist supervision prepares patient specific compounded sterile products including hazardous medications:

  • Using appropriate PPE including CSTD as appropriate
  • Preparation according to NIOSH, USP, and SOP guidelines

Performs daily cleanroom maintenance activities including:

  • Cleaning of hood in accordance with SOP
  • Decontamination of hood as required
  • Daily, weekly and monthly environmental services duties
  • Review and documentation of hood maintenance activities
  • Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities
  • Verifies and balances cash register tapes with funds received

Participates in management activities:

  • Acts as a positive role model
  • Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to individuals within the department as well as with patients, the general public, and other departments
  • Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others
  • Provides redirection to technician and student staff, as need to ensure efficiency is maintained
  • Utilizes advanced problem-solving methods to troubleshoot issues that arise in the pharmacy
  • Will perform duties unique to North Dodge, Quad Cities, and River Crossing practice sites

Position includes all responsibilities performed by Certified Pharmacy Technicians in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies. Participates in database maintenance with computers, equipment, and cash registers. Assists with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire
  2. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification
  3. High school diploma or the equivalent
  4. Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences or four years of experience as a pharmacy technician

Special Qualification:

  • Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards

Desired Qualifications:

  • Clean room experience with hazardous drug sterile compounding is highly desirable
  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
  • Experience working in team environment
  • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
  • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
  • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
  • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment
