Job Description
Norfolk Hardware & Home Center is seeking an experienced Assistant Store Manager to join our team in supporting day-to-day store operations and leading our dedicated staff. This is an excellent opportunity for a retail management professional to grow with an established hardware and home improvement retailer serving the greater Boston community.
About the Role
As Assistant Store Manager, you will work closely with the Retail Operations Manager to oversee the aspects of store, including sales, customer service, inventory management, recruitment and staff performance & development. You'll serve as a subject matter expert across our departments while ensuring exceptional customer experiences and maintaining operational excellence. This position will report to the Director of Operations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and manage store associates to maximize productivity and customer satisfaction
- Assign tasks, resolve conflicts, and address performance issues
- Hold team accountable to company policies and procedures
- Partner with Operations Manager on personnel decisions and customer service improvements
Sales & Customer Experience
- Actively participate in sales efforts by assisting customers with purchases and product demonstrations
- Provide expert product knowledge and delivery information to customers
- Monitor and improve store productivity metrics
- Ensure excellent customer service standards across all interactions
Training & Development
- Train associates on product knowledge and effective sales techniques
- Lead continuous learning initiatives for personal and team growth
- Mentor staff to achieve individual and store goals
Daily Operations
- Manage store opening/closing procedures including cash handling and security
- Complete administrative tasks and maintain accurate documentation
- Fill in for absent staff and support special sales events
- Execute corporate policies and inter-store communications
Inventory & Merchandising
- Oversee inventory replenishment ensuring product is put away properly and to maximize sales
- Ensure accurate merchandise tracking and data entry
- Maintain store appearance, cleanliness, and organized backroom areas
- Collaborate with Operations Manager to create & maintain effective product displays to drive sales
Facilities Management
- Coordinate daily maintenance and upkeep of store facilities
- Manage ordering, receiving, and stocking processes as a function of sales team
- Oversee building appearance both inside and outside and work with Operation Manager for needed action
Experience & Education
- Minimum 6 years of retail management experience in fast-paced environments
- Employee management experience including coaching, hiring and training
- Experience in hardware, paint, lumber, or building materials industry strongly preferred
- Proficiency with ERP systems (we use BisTrack) and Microsoft Office Suite
- Bilingual capabilities a plus

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs with assistance
- Comfortable walking, standing, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders
- Capable of operating forklifts safely (training provided)
- Able to work in various weather conditions
- Professional appearance and demeanor
- Availability to work 6am-6:30pm each day, scheduled for 5 day work week.
