NYC Parks is the steward of over 30, acres of land 14 percent of New York City including more than 5, individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. We look after , street trees, and two million more in parks.
The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10, acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund the restoration and management across these ecosystems.

Major Responsibilities -Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Natural Areas Crews, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, plan and oversee natural area restoration work and crew operations in an assigned region of NYC. - Perform administrative duties for assigned staff, including the scheduling, tracking, reporting and presentation of field work activities and the input and analysis of GIS data. Ensure progress adheres to goals and milestones. - Train and supervise up to three field crew leaders in natural areas restoration operations, including direction and troubleshooting in the field. Develop and conduct trainings for new staff. Help maintain an inclusive and diverse work atmosphere and provide conflict resolution as needed. - Serve as technical advisor to support crew work in all natural area ecotypes. Research new methods to advance team expertise in urban natural area restoration, including plant identification, operation of diesel, two-cycle and electric power tools and equipment, native plant establishment, irrigation systems and pesticide usage. Oversee pesticide applications and ensure adherence to local laws. Supervise maintenance and inventory of tools, equipment and supplies for natural area restoration projects and ensure adequate resources and training for all tasks. - Support active collaboration with internal and external partners. Identify opportunities for complementary partnerships and increase opportunity for community engagement in caring for natural areas. - Provide expert advice to other agencies and Parks divisions on best management practices for natural areas care and protection. - Provide data, technical content, and budget information as needed to support development of grant applications and proposal with partners inside and outside the agency.
Duration: October to June 30, 35 hours per week.

ADMINISTRATIVE HORTICULTURIST - C
Minimum Qualifications 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with major study in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture and four years of full-time, paid experience in horticultural work of which two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity; or
2. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or evidence of having passed an examination for a high school equivalency diploma and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.
Preferred Skills 1. Excellent leadership skills and capacity to reconcile input from multiple stakeholders.2. 5 years of field experience in restoration or management of urban natural habitats, preferably in New York City. At least five years’ experience managing staff. 3. Broad understanding of native plant communities of Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. 4. Experience in all facets of landscape restoration activities including vegatation removal and plant establishment techniques. 5. Valid New York State driver License. 6.
