JOB SUMMARY
: The Pharmacy Technician prepares, fills and distributes medications and sterile products. All technicians are under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION High school graduation or equivalent. Two years of college with appropriate science courses or completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician program. EXPERIENCE Two years as a pharmacy technician or related experience preferred. Hospital pharmacy technician experience is strongly preferred. PREREQUISITE SKILLS Demonstrated working knowledge of general pharmacy operations. Demonstrated knowledge of drug names, dosage forms, packaging and storage requirements. Demonstrated application of aseptic technique procedures. Ability to prepare sterile solutions. Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and hardware. Ability to work tactfully and effectively with patients, nursing staff, physician staff, and all hospital personnel. Ability to prioritize work flow and respond appropriately to immediate or urgent patient or work flow needs. Ability to read, speak, write, understand and follow English verbal and written instruction. LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Must be currently registered as a Pharmacy Technician in the state of California. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL (not modifiable) Processing orders for the preparation, filling and refilling of narcotic and non-narcotic medications for employee/take home prescriptions, inpatients, floor stock, offsite facilities, or case carts according to applicable policy and procedure guidelines Distributing and refilling medications (narcotic and non-narcotic) in the Pyxis Medstations Preparing intravenous admixtures, other sterile and non-sterile preparations, including, but not limited to parenteral nutrition, intravenous antibiotics, large volume intravenous additives, GU irrigant syringes, triple antibiotic irrigations and narcotic analgesia syringes Preparing chemotherapy only if certified to do so by MGH Pharmacy Department and performing LFGI decontamination and cleaning Maintaining quality of drugs by continuously monitoring expiration dates Employing established policies, procedures and standards for aseptic technique and handling sterile products Maintaining appropriate quality control log documentation and participating in quality control activities Maintaining adequate inventory, including, but not limited to, stocking shelves, procuring inventory, unit dose repackaging, and assuring appropriate levels of stock Maintaining computerized patient profile records with additions, deletions, or changes under the supervision of the pharmacist. This includes sorting, assessing and prioritizing communications and orders for the pharmacist with the assistance of any established triage protocol and entering orders Maintaining an orderly, neat and sterile work area, including the following of appropriate policies and procedures when handling hazardous substances Maintaining work logs in the appropriate area related to the activities of narcotic and drug preparation, maintenance of equipment, repackaging and status of work completed Assist Pharmacists in performing monthly inspections of medication storage in the patient care areas
