Part-time Writing Consultant, Writing Center Salary $15.60 Hourly Description The Writing Center Consultant provides academic support to all Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute students. Providing a writing consultation means helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become independent learners. Writing Center Consultants help students clarify and/or reinforce course content, understand assignments and material, and develop skills necessary to become effective writers. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, formulating ideas for papers, working on revisions, or providing technical support for digital components of classes. Examples of Duties Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Be punctual for all shifts whether in person or online Be attentive and ready to help a student at anytime Meet one-to-one with students, in small groups, or virtually (via email or real-time video web conferencing) to provide writing assistance Complete and submit all required documentation, including but not limited to records of writing consultations Assist students with computer related activities such as Moodle, printing, scanning, etc. as needed Marginal Functions: Submit accurate time sheets weekly and by the last day of each month Complete required tutor training (first semester only) and attend additional consultation-training sessions as required Develop a good understanding and knowledge of college services, supports, and resources Assist with additional duties as needed, for example, placing telephone calls to students, answering phones, copying, filing and organizing materials, other clerical duties Perform other related work as required. Qualifications and Working Conditions Knowledge of: Interpersonal communication skills, including a well-developed ease in relating to people from varied backgrounds Verbal and written communication skills Ability to: Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the consultation relationship Create an atmosphere of mutual trust, support, and compassion for students Demonstrate and attitude of helpfulness and customer service Relate to students, faculty and staff in a congenial and professional manner Environmental Conditions: The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace, and working closely with others. The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment. Physical Conditions: Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens. The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously. Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel. Scheduling: This is a part-time position, with flexible scheduling, based on the needs of the office. Employees must maintain a weekly schedule of available hours in a physical Writing Center or a virtual Writing Center space.
