JOB SUMMARY: The Athletic Trainer is a licensed healthcare professional who plays a critical role in protecting the health, safety, and performance of student-athletes in the Dougherty County School System. In accordance with Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers regulations, Georgia High School Association (GHSA) policies, and National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) standards of practice, the Athletic Trainer provides prevention, clinical evaluation, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer collaborates with the District Athletics Director, school administrators, coaches, and families to ensure student-athletes receive high-quality healthcare and support.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited program (Master's degree required for new entrants since Fall 2022; Master's preferred for experienced, currently licensed candidates); Current certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers; Current Georgia Athletic Trainer License (or eligibility for licensure) issued by the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers; Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification for the Professional Rescuer (or equivalent); Knowledge of GHSA health and safety policies (including concussion management, heat/hydration, and sudden cardiac arrest protocols); Experience working with adolescent and/or young adult athletes in a clinical, school, or athletic setting; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and the Board may find appropriate. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong clinical assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation skills; Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities with students, parents, coaches, and administrators; Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare and educational team; Knowledge of evidence-based sports medicine practices, emergency action planning, and injury documentation systems; Stamina and flexibility to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays during athletic seasons; Physical ability to lift/carry equipment and assist athletes with mobility. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical Care & Safety Establish and maintain a comprehensive athletic training program for high school and middle school athletics; Provide injury/illness prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play clearance for student-athletes in line with Georgia licensure and GHSA standards; Maintain compliance with all GHSA, state, and district safety protocols (including concussion management, heat acclimatization, and cardiac emergency procedures); Create a safe playing environment by monitoring environmental risks, facility safety, and hydration protocols. Event & Program Coverage Provide on-site coverage for home athletic events, practices, and GHSA-sanctioned competitions during the school year; Coordinate and supervise pre-participation physicals and manage athlete clearance processes; Serve as the primary point of contact for athletic healthcare during in-season play. Collaboration & Communication Maintain regular communication with the District Athletics Director, school principal, school nurses, coaches, and families regarding athlete health and progress; Partner with coaching staff on injury prevention strategies and sport-specific conditioning programs; Provide professional development and share current sports medicine best practices with coaches and athletic staff. Administration & Compliance Maintain accurate documentation of injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation sessions; File required reports on injuries, treatments, and incident management in compliance with district and state requirements; Manage inventory and budget for athletic training supplies/equipment; Assist with the fitting of protective gear, braces, and taping for injury prevention. Other Duties Uphold ethical and professional standards consistent with the NATA Code of Ethics and Georgia law; Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or District Athletics Director. REPORTS TO: Building Principal, with functional supervision by the District Athletics Director.
