The City of Redding is accepting applications for a part-time Administrative Assistant I position in the Code Enforcement Division of the Development Services Department. Administrative Assistants performs a wide variety of clerical and secretarial support for technical, professional and management staff as well as a wide variety of clerical accounting work involving the processing and maintenance of financial or statistical records.

We are looking for someone to Prepare correspondence, notices, miscellaneous reports, including staff reports, and/or documents using basic knowledge of a personal computer and word processing software programs. Keep calendars, make appointments, receive people, answer and place telephone calls, handle mail and other correspondence. Serve as back-up secretary for Council or commissions. Click Here for the Full Job Description Qualifications we're looking for Knowledge of principles and practices of good office management; proper punctuation, spelling and grammatical usage Knowledge of various filing systems such as alpha, numerical, chronological, subject, etc. Knowledge of PC word processing and related software Knowledge of proper English language usage when communicating verbally with vendors, managers, staff and the public. Ability to interact effectively with the public, managers and employees; compose a variety of correspondence on routine matters Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of others Ability to prepare clear and concise reports Ability to maintain confidentiality and diplomacy when handling sensitive matters Ability to pass a typing test of 30 net wpm. Education, Experience & Special Requirements: Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Typical education would include high school diploma, or equivalent. Typical experience would include three to four years of experience in a related secretarial field involving shorthand, transcription, typing, and word processing.

Examination Process: The examination process may include an oral board examination, a written examination, practical examination or any combination thereof.

The typing requirement for this position is 30 NET words per minute. Candidates must attach a valid typing certificate, as outlined on the attachment entitled "How to Obtain a Typing Certificate" by the closing date and time.
If you are a current City of Redding Employee and took and passed the Administrative Assistant examination on or after December 2020, you are not required to retest and may retain your prior score, OR, if you prefer, you may retest to receive a new score. You will not have the option of retesting and keeping the better of the two scores. Your name may remain on the eligibility list for a period of five years before you will be required to test again, unless significant changes are made to the examination. Either way, you must select the appropriate box on the supplemental question that asks to either "Retest" or "Retain" your previous score.
Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon: Positive past employment references Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
Veterans Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score. Holidays: An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.
Vacation:
Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits. Sick Leave:
Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Health Insurance: Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.
Retirement:
Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System .
Administrative Leave: Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.
Deferred Compensation Plans: Available for interested employees.
Union Dues: Some job classifications are represented by collective bargaining units, the employees of which may choose to join and pay union dues. Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program: Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.
